Strong Bones Program
Strong Bones is our therapist-led strength program designed for individuals with low bone density, osteopenia, or osteoporosis.
Build Bone. Build Strength. Build Longevity.
Build Bone. Build Strength. Build Longevity.
The Taranis Strong Bones program is a therapist-led strength training program designed for individuals with low bone density, osteopenia, or osteoporosis.
This small-group program focuses on safe, progressive resistance training, balance development, and functional strength in a supportive, closely supervised environment. Sessions are intentionally paced, highly coached, and appropriate for individuals who may feel unsure or intimidated by traditional gym settings.
Strong Bones is led by Brenna Seymour, BKin, Athletic Therapist. Our approach reflects current research showing that properly supervised strength training can support bone mineral density, reduce fall risk, and improve long-term independence.
Whether you’re navigating a recent diagnosis or proactively caring for your future health, our Strong Bones Program will help you:
Build bone density
Increase muscular strength
Approach weight training with confidence!

Vanessa Sullivan, Founder and Owner of Taranis Athletics
Vanessa Sullivan brings over two decades of experience in strength and conditioning program design and delivery. With a long-standing commitment to making strength training accessible across all stages of life, and as a woman navigating her own perimenopause journey, the creation of the Strong Bones program felt like a natural and necessary evolution in the Taranis offerings.
Vanessa works collaboratively with Brenna Seymour and allied health professionals to guide the program’s structure, intake process, and progression standards, supporting participant safety and long-term success.
She may also step in to coach Strong Bones sessions when appropriate, bringing a coaching lens informed by biomechanics, nervous system regulation, and years of hands-on experience working with diverse populations.
Program Director & Admin Lead
Together, Brenna and Vanessa work collaboratively in the research framework, program structure, and intake process for Strong Bones, ensuring the program reflects current evidence, clinical best practices, and real-world coaching experience. They share a vision of addressing the growing need for accessible, well-coached strength training to support bone density, balance, and long-term independence.
Is Strong Bones Right for Me?
Strong Bones is not about pushing through fear or forcing your body to do something it’s not ready for. It’s about learning how to load your body safely, progressively, with confidence, and with bone health as the priority.
Strong Bones may be a great fit for you if:
You are peri or post menopause
You’ve been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis
You want to improve strength, balance, posture, and confidence
You’ve been told to lift weights or strength train, but “be careful” and weren’t shown how
You feel unsure about lifting weights and don’t know what to do in a gym
You value coaching, education, and a supportive environment
You want training that supports long-term independence and quality of life
You do not need prior lifting experience. You do not need to be “fit.”
You just need to be open to learning and progressing at a pace that makes sense for your body.
A Note on Medical Conditions
The Taranis Strong Bones Program is designed to complement medical and allied health care, not replace it. If you have concerns related to fractures, joint replacements, spinal health, or other medical conditions, we encourage open communication and collaboration with your healthcare provider.
We are happy to work alongside physiotherapists, athletic therapists, chiropractors, and physicians when appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or reach out anytime.
-
That’s completely normal, and you’re not alone. Many people come to strength training feeling cautious, uncertain, or even intimidated.
Our Strong Bones program is designed to meet you where you are. Nothing is rushed. Questions are encouraged. Your comfort and confidence matter just as much as the exercises themselves.
You don’t need to be fearless to begin, you just need to be willing to take the first supported step.
-
Strong Bones is a program specifically structured around bone health research and clinical best practices.
Taranis Athletics has nearly two decades of CrossFit delivery experience and most of our programs support life long fitness goals. While we do have athletes that are focused on competition or performance metrics, the majority are not.
-
Bones respond to load, but “heavy” is always relative to the individual. The program uses progressive resistance, meaning we gradually increase load when your body is ready, not before.
Research shows that appropriately loaded strength training can stimulate bone adaptation, even later in life. That doesn’t mean unsafe lifting or maximal efforts, it means intelligent strength work.
-
The LIFTMOR trial is a landmark research study that showed post-menopausal women with low bone density improved bone mineral density using a supervised, high-intensity resistance and impact training protocol.
Taranis Strong Bones is informed by this research, while adapting it thoughtfully for real humans with real bodies, histories, and needs, guided by over a decade of hands-on experience working with similar populations.
-
Modifications are not an exception, they’re part of the program.
Exercises can be adjusted for knee pain, hip or shoulder issues, spinal considerations, arthritis, or difficulty getting on and off the floor. The focus is always on what can be done safely and effectively, not on forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.
-
Some bone-loading benefit comes from impact, but impact is introduced thoughtfully and only when appropriate. This might include small hops, controlled step-downs, or other low-risk options, or it may be omitted entirely, depending on your needs.
Impact is never mandatory, never rushed, and never added without purpose.
-
Strength, balance, and confidence often improve within weeks. Changes in bone density occur more slowly and are typically assessed over months, not weeks.
The real win is consistency, building a sustainable strength habit that supports your body now and in the years ahead.
-
No. Bones remain responsive to the right kind of stimulus throughout life.
Starting later doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance, it means you’re choosing to support your future mobility, independence, and confidence starting now.
